2012-366 Day 304 – LA Rock and Roll Half Marathon

So, as you might have gathered if you read the blog towards the end of last week, I was regretting the decision to sign up for this race. In fact, pretty much the only reason I decided to do it was to protect my pride, I didn’t want to have to tell all the people that knew I was running it that I didn’t, nor did I want to have to explain it. I did decide, however, to make it as low key as possible, I asked Jess to stay home and I was only going to be there just before the start and just after I finished.

My time frame got a little squeezed when I had trouble falling asleep the night before and overslept the alarm by half an hour. I had built in some time, but I feared traffic near the race (being downtown LA and and all), especially as the race grew closer. I picked up all the gear that I gathered the night before and equipped myself for the race, getting ready and out the door by 6 am. I stopped by McDonalds and picked up breakfast, since I hadn’t properly carb-loaded the night before I wanted to be sure I had something to eat so I didn’t have any problems like the 10 miler I bonked on a couple weeks ago. Prepped and ready, I hit the freeways and sped off towards the race.

I was surprised that there was actually some traffic on the freeways at that early hour, but I didn’t really hit anything heavy until the last few miles before my exit. After getting off the freeway I headed towards the lots that I knew, and angled towards the L.A. Live lots that were supposedly offering discounted parking. Gigantic mistake on a couple levels, 1) the streets had been narrowed down to one lane (which I didn’t realize until I was a couple cars away and a half an hour later) and 2) the garage that I was aiming for wasn’t running the promotion and wound up costing me 25 dollars to park in (sadly, I had no time to rectify the situation). I found a spot, made final preparations, and headed towards the line.

Pardon me while I get slightly indelicate here, but there is always the matter of the pre-race restroom break to consider. There was a significant line for the two stalls at the parking garage, so I decided to try my luck near the line. The first set of 10 or so port-a-potties each had a line ten people deep (situated just outside Staples Center), and I considered waiting there briefly (it was about 7:10 at this point, with the race starting at 7:30 for the elites) before coming to the conclusion that there had to be more somewhere else. I headed to the start corrals and made my way across, where I saw on the other side of the street was the command center and dozens of port-a-potties with no line. Mission accomplished, I found my corral (number 17) and stepped into the back, started to stretch and checking out all of the costumes and the scenery around me.

I can see the Starting line up there . . . some where.

The end of the crowd was much closer.

It took a while for 16 waves of starts to go off, but we eventually made our way to the front. I gently eased my way through the gaps in the crowd after we crossed the starting line and settled into a slightly too fast pace. I was trying to do my first mile in 11 minutes, but wound up finishing it in about 10 and a half. At 11 minutes the music in my headphones briefly subsided and the words “walk, walk, walk” floated into my ear. I pulled off to the side of the course and started walking for a minute.

I had decided to take a new approach to the half marathon after completing the Disneyland Half Marathon with Belen just before Labor Day. As we went through the course, alternating running and walking, I was struck by how much energy I had and how much easier the whole experience was for me. Knowing that I’m still a ways away from my target weight, and my running training has been crossed up with all sorts of other activities, I decided to try the run/walk method promoted by Jeff Galloway (who is sponsored by Disney and had Belen converted on our Disney run). Looking at my ideal pace, which I decided to try at 11 minutes per mile, the recommendation was two and a half minutes of running to one minute of walking. I wanted to use the first mile as a warm up, which is why I ran the whole thing, but I set the app to start my intervals immediately after the first 11 minutes were done.

We ran away from Staples and the Convention Center and towards the campus of USC. The furthest point of the initial out and back, out the other way and back course (it formed a sort of V, with runners going each direction and only cones separating them) was the Colosseum, which we ran around and started back towards the starting area. I looked for the space shuttle at the Science Center, but couldn’t get a glimpse. I must also compliment our friend Michael, who had a hand in constructing the Galen Center, as it made for a wonderful bit of shade along the course. Actually, that was a major advantage of running in the city, while the sun had come up, the buildings were providing shade while we ran in the streets.

As the miles started ticking up, with little clocks next to the mile markers, I started doing the math (my wave started about 31 minutes behind the official time) and realized that I was doing very well on time. Mile 6 brought us back by the starting line and a bit past that was the finish, and I watched some of the faster runners already on their way in. I still had half way to go, but was feeling pretty good.

There were only two major hills on the course, otherwise it was pretty flat. The first one came at the seven mile mark on Figueroa right before we made a right turn into the tunnel on 2nd Street, which was pretty cool to run through. The second was heading onto the bridge on 4th street. Both were timed so that I got a walk break part way up, and that helped a great deal.

The advantage of the out and back style course was that I could see the markers on the other side and gauge how far away they were on the way back. The twelve mile marker was at the end of the tunnel, so I knew when I started the tunnel on the way back, there would be just over a mile left. The end of the bridge marked the furthest point and the start of making our way back (just over 9 and a half miles in), and the view from the top looking back at the city was rather spectacular, especially on such a clear day.

I can’t say much about the streets between the tunnel and the bridge, however, because they were pretty run down. There was one section which housed a fish market that smelled particularly pungent, although I suppose that encouraged me to run faster. Arriving back at the tunnel was a blessing, and I looked at the clock in even more amazement than I had the last few mile markers, as I was doing better than I ever had before. A walk break came up in the tunnel and I decided that it was the last one, I would get to the end of the tunnel, turn left down the hill and run all the way to the finish line (about three quarters of a mile).

I did so, and it felt fantastic. I probably passed five hundred people on the way down Figueroa, and, while the 13 mile marker took a little longer than I thought it should have to come into view (now I know how you feel Belen), I saw it and then the finish line shortly thereafter. The finish clock read 2:58 as I approached, I was going to make it to through less than three hours from the original starting gun, where my original goal was to finish in three hours from when I started. I crossed the line around 2:59 on the clock, which, subtracting my 31 minute delay, means I had a personal best time of 2:28:02 seconds (I, of course, found this out later on the official results). My previous best had been my first half marathon in which I clocked a 2:39:04.

I can’t really describe the feeling of having blown away my expectations so completely. From just wanting to finish to avoid embarrassment to posting my best time yet was an unfathomable result. I gathered my medal, a small Jamba Juice, chocolate milk, and a Marathon bar and started to make my way back to the car. After texting Jess and pausing briefly to hear the headliner band (which happened to be on the way back towards my vehicle), I paid my parking fee and found the car. What I had missed in my discombobulated state that morning was the fact that I left my driver’s side window completely rolled down the entire time I was there. Thank the Lord for many things that day, but chief among them was that not a thing in the car was touched, it was exactly as I left it.

I headed home and then out to softball (for which you already have the story from Sunday). It will still be a while before I sign up for my next half marathon, as I have the L.A. Marathon next on my schedule as I try to do both L.A. and New York next year (this year’s edition is scheduled for this Sunday, all the best to them if they try to run it). The feeling of accomplishment that this one left me with, however, probably means that I’ll be back for another round somewhere.

2012-366 Day 303 – Sick Day IV

Well, that wasn’t what I hoped for. The Half Marathon recap will have to wait a day because I spent most of today out of commission. Spent last night carving a pumpkin for a work contest today, which kept me up far later than I should have stayed up. After I finished carving, I ran out of steam and Jess finished putting it together. I woke up this morning and my lower back and left hamstring had seized up. Jess made arrangements to get the pumpkin to work, and I stayed in bed (seeing as I couldn’t move).

Jess sent me a picture of the final display from work (apparently we won the Director’s Award for the first time, after having won the People’s Choice award the last few years):

Sadly, I wish laying around in bed today stiff and sore was the biggest problem. Unfortunately around 4 a migraine kicked in (I understand they can be triggered at the end of high stress periods, which I suppose I finished this weekend). I usually get one once every year or two, but it is infrequent enough that it surprises me every time how annoying they are. I’ve been up for a couple hours now, the pain is mostly gone but the tension remains. Hopefully I can sleep some tonight and get back to normal tomorrow, but we’ll see.

Unrelated, but prayers for all those affected by super-storm Sandy.

2012-366 Day 302 – Half Marathon and Softball Game 7

Today was utterly insane and I can barely focus to write. This was going to be a lot longer, but I think I’ve hit the end of the line for the day. I’ll try to go into the Half Marathon more tomorrow, but here’s the nutshell: I ran a personal best 2:28:02 (my previous best was 2:39:04 at my first Half Marathon – Disneyland 2009) by using a new run/walk method (about an 11:18 mile pace).

I made it back to my softball game, knowing that we’d only have nine players. Upon showing up, I found out that one of our women was under the weather, so we were playing with the minimum eight (and taking an automatic out at the bottom of the order with only two women in the lineup). Long story short here again: we wound up winning 10-5 by playing excellent defense, having some timely hitting, and some lucky plays. After hitting a sacrifice ground ball in my first at bat with a runner on third, I actually managed to drive a ball to right center and limp into second with a double in my second at bat. A hit back to the pitcher sent me to third after it got away from him a bit, but the third baseman was standing on the base and prevented me from trying to score. Unfortunately the umpire was looking at the play at first and didn’t see it. After I (loudly) brought it to his attention, the third baseman first tried to argue he did nothing illegal and then finished by saying that I was slow and wouldn’t have scored anyway.

Needless to say, this ticked me off. After gently mentioning the fact that I had ran a Half Marathon that morning (and what had you done this morning, thank you very much), I let it go for the moment and wound up being stranded at third. If we had lost by one run, I would have been even more perturbed. My next at bat, I hit a short flare into right that I stretched into a double, and then scored from second on the next hit (a line drive into mid left). Feeling vindicated, I did wind up grounding out to short in my last at bat. I know I didn’t have the greatest attitude today, but I was a little raw from fatigue and effort. I was better for most of the rest of the game.

I played third to help save my legs, and got to pull one of my favorite defensive plays there, the ground ball to third base with the bases loaded, step on third and turn the double play to first. The other team managed to load the bases in the bottom of the last inning, but a fantastic running catch from our center fielder bailed us out and we scored our second win of the year.

The two wins are misleading, as we’ve lost two games by 1 run and tied another, so a few bounces our way mean that we could be 5-2 instead of the 2-4-1 record we currently sport. The entire league is very balanced this year, anyone can win the championship.

2012-366 Day 301 – Will

Jess and I braved the traffic to head downtown and pick up my racing bib for tomorrow, so in less than 9 hours I’ll be running down Figueroa away from the Convention Center. Having got one trip down there out of the way, I’m definitely feeling better about going tomorrow. Despite my nervousness from yesterday, I’m simply relying on willpower to do what I’ve done before and get my feet out on the street. Sadly I have to be up in six hours or so, so I’m keeping this post short so I can get ready for bed (we’ll see if I actually sleep). I’ll let you know how everything goes tomorrow night.

2012-366 Day 300 – Regrets

It seemed like such a good idea at the time. A $29 dollar discount, another Half Marathon a month and a half before, and a run through the streets of Los Angeles. Things certainly made a lot of sense back on Leap Day 2012.

Flash forward to this weekend, when the Half Marathon I signed up for at the time is less than 48 hours away. And it’s now that the regrets are kicking in. Here are my problems:

-Going to the convention center twice in two days sounds exhausting.

-It’s softball season, I have the early game on Sunday (at 1pm) and only 9 players, including myself, so I have to be there (which is only a potential problem because the race starts at 7:30, which means I may not start until 8, and if it takes me more than 3 hours then I’m running short on time to get back).

-Even with my good mood this week, I’m tired and, apparently, whiny.

-Despite the fact that I just completed a Half Marathon two months ago, a plan to try an official run/walk strategy that worked fairly well with Belen, and staying very active the last two months, I still have nervousness and doubts about being able to do it.

-I’m having trouble motivating myself to get up and out to Downtown L.A. early Sunday morning and dealing with all the traffic around the race.

I wish I hadn’t signed up, but I’m waffling back and forth right now (leaning towards doing it, one of the reasons being that I missed two Half Marathons I signed up for early and then my shoulder problems started, I’ve finally evened it back up having finished two and don’t want to go back to being in the hole). I’ve also told too many people that I’m doing it and don’t know that I want to have to explain dropping out (I guess that includes everyone reading this too).

I really just needed a space to kind of vent my thoughts, and since I don’t have a diary, had to do it in the blog. Note to self: No more Half Marathons during Softball season.

Actually, I think I’ve decided after my Marathon-palooza next year, I’m going to look for shorter (maybe more adventurous races) and see if I can get other people to do them with me. Trying to motivate myself is getting difficult, and I had a lot of fun running with Belen in the last Half Marathon. We’ll see if I can make that happen and if anyone is foolish enough to come with me.

2012-366 Day 299 – Experiences

Every so often, something happens in my day that, immediately after I experience it, I think, “That’s going to make a great blog post! I’m excited.” Unfortunately there are other events that, immediately after I experience it, I think, “That’s going to make a great blog post! Too bad I have to tell people about it.”

This, as you might have guessed, is a case of the latter. It all started on Tuesday in my fitness class. Now, the class is mostly populated by Faculty and Staff members, but a few students (two guys and a girl) made it in at the end of registration because they needed one more unit for whatever reason. The girl and our teacher (another woman) were talking about massages, and the teacher recommended a local place. Since I was right there, I piped up with the name of Jess’ favorite place, noting that they cost about the same and everyone who had been there loved it. We continued the conversation for another minute or two, and then went about class business.

So far, so good, right? Today we received an email that our teacher wouldn’t be available for class due to a family emergency, and another teacher would take over for the day. We went through the entirety of class and were wrapping up when I heard a voice behind me.

“Sir?”

I turned toward the sound merely out of impulse, not yet registering the awful truth. The girl took this as acknowledgement and moved forward with her line of questioning.

“Sir, what was the name of that massage place you were talking about last time?”

It was right around the word massage that my brain actually processed that she was talking to me. The horror and the answer arrived at the same time, thankfully it was the answer that escaped my mouth. Sir? Sir? Holy cow I’m glad my self worth is not wrapped up in my self-image and not being seen as old, because having a college girl refer to you as sir will take a two by four to any misconceptions you may have had of seeming younger. Ouch!

She finished up by asking if I remembered the name of the place that the teacher recommended, and I told her. She thanked me and headed off. I gathered my towel and bottle of water and thought to myself, “Yup, that’s going in the blog.”

2012-366 Day 298 – Moods

I’m really not certain why, as I haven’t changed much of anything, but I’ve been in a really good mood for the last three days. I haven’t been sleeping more (though I really should), and nothing really great has happened in that time frame (outside of day to day life). I can think of a few areas individually where things have changed, but none that explain the overall elevation of my mood. What areas am I speaking of?

I have gotten back into my active lifestyle after recovering from my injuries, but that’s been almost two weeks now.

My spiritual life has been trending upward, and that has helped a lot, but again, that’s been going on for a little bit longer than the time frame I’m looking at.

I also have my weight trending downward, and that’s certainly helped some, but I hesitate to attribute the entire reason for it since it’s not particularly noticeable except via the scale.

I have had a catchy Bruno Mars song stuck in my head since I saw it on Saturday Night Live this week, and I suppose that has helped too, but I’ve had songs stuck in my head before and not noticed this sort of uptick.

Work has been pretty quiet, and that’s always a bonus, but also hardly unusual.

I had to have one of my crowns replaced, which is painful both physically and in the wallet, with a temporary going in last week, falling out on Sunday (as I told the dental assistant, I just Poligripped it back in, this isn’t my first crown rodeo), and finally getting the permanent one today, which took a lot longer than expected because they had to make a new one due to the fact that the dentist didn’t like how the one they made last time fit (he’s a great dentist, but apparently a perfectionist. Although we were replacing a crown that went bad, so I guess I appreciate starting this one off with the best possible chance to succeed). But even all that only temporarily dinged my mood.

Jess and I even had a good fight Monday night (I suppose this still was conceived as a marriage blog, even if I did kind of hijack it for this experiment in the last year, so I have to mention it every so often), but, after sorting everything out, mood was back up again pretty quickly.

The transitory nature of moods has always frustrated me. There are so many interlocking variables and even one being off can tilt the entire alignment (if I haven’t eaten in too long, my mood will quickly tank). And it’s in putting all of these pieces together that we arrive at where we are. So, for whatever reason, the current mood trend is way up, which is very unusual for me. I usually maintain a very even keel, so going too far up or too far down doesn’t happen all that often, and, as you’ve noticed by this point in the post, I take note of that.

Thankfully I do not have a cyclical personality like some do, so I don’t have to look forward to an equal low in the near future. I can just enjoy it for what it is (even if I can’t figure it out in about six hundred words) and hope it sticks around.

2012-366 Day 297 – Political Ads

This is the worst time of the year to watch the news at night, because of the barrage of political ads. The contradictions, the omitted facts, the attack ads, it’s all really frustrating to see. This is where owning a DVR comes in so handy for other shows.

I’m really done with this whole election cycle, but sadly there’s still a couple weeks left. Guess we’ll have to suffer through it together.

A busy day today, and a late night, so I’ll see you tomorrow.

2012-366 Day 296 – Rock and Roll Half-Marathon Pregame

Okay, note to self: in the future, do not schedule any Half-Marathons during Softball season (sub-note: do not schedule any more Half-Marathons period . . . at least for a while).

Yes, this Sunday I get to run through the streets of L.A. (okay, most likely run-walk, my training hasn’t been all that great, it’s been more of the cross-training variety). I would like all these races more if they didn’t start so early, but then I would hate all these races more because they would be too hot. So I guess you take what you get.

The course starts and ends at Staples Center/L.A. Live/The Convention Center and then does an interesting out and back and out the other way and back route that I’ve never really seen before. I have to go pick up my bib on Friday or Saturday, be out there early Sunday, and try to finish before 11 so I have some time to enjoy the festivities before heading back to a softball game at 1. Yup, I’m a stud (or was it I’m stupid? I always forget the pi . . . mmm, pie . . . wait, what was I talking about?).

Like I said up top (sort of), this will probably be my last Half-Marathon for a while. I may come back to them after my Marathon or two next year, but I think I may settle into the 5 to 10K range for a while (but perhaps throw in some obstacles). I am looking forward to running through the streets of L.A. and hearing some of the bands on the route.

2012-366 Day 295 – Softball Game 6

Well, that was awkward. I got an email this morning reminding me that when I originally set up the schedule, one of the umpires wouldn’t be able to make it to the field until an hour after the games started. Unfortunately three of the coaches regularly umpire, and I was playing in the first game, the second sent the aforementioned reminder email, and the third one is in India on business. After last week (which was resolved this week and all misunderstandings were cleared up, so that was a good thing today), this certainly wasn’t how we wanted to start this week.

Thankfully, once we got underway, everything went fairly smoothly. Unfortunately despite a good start to the game, we came out on the wrong end of a defensive game, losing 8-7. After a good hit in the first inning, I flied out in my next two at bats, a rare case of my hitting the ball too hard (although I could have hit the second one harder, I could feel my hands already coming off the bat when I made contact. It was a very solid hit, I wonder what it would have done if I had swung through harder). With two games left, we won’t be able to crack .500 in the regular season, but considering two of our four losses were by one run and we had a tie, our record easily could have swung the other way.

In fact the league seems very balanced this year. Today’s games all finished with a one run margin of victory, which is entirely rare if not unprecedented in our league, except for the fact that it’s the second time it has happened in five weeks during this season. Amazing, and it means the playoffs are truly going to be a toss up.
