2012-366 Day 324 – Tech Fun

I like having the latest updates for any devices I have, even if that means they’re still a little buggy. This has been a bit of an annoyance when it came to my phone, as I bought a new one specifically to have the latest and greatest operating system of Android, only to have two new versions and no updates from Sprint since then. When the latest rumor surfaced that the phone would be upgraded this week turned out to be only rumor, I decided to take manners in to my own hands.

There’s a shirt out there that amuses me, “I void warranties.” While I generally don’t do so on the physical hardware, I’m certainly up for messing with the software. After determining that hopefully the only thing I would lose would be my Star Wars Angry Bird scores, I decided to take the plunge and divorce myself from Sprint and HTC’s operating system. There is a great community made replacement system called Cyanogenmod, and the recently put out an update for my phone.

Unfortunately I decided to start this process at 3 pm, figuring two hours was plenty of time and I’d have no problems (I’m a professional, right?). Needless to say, it was 5:45 before I had wiped my phone all together (and lost the stuff on the internal partition) and barely finished getting it at least working again. Thankfully the items on my SD card didn’t get erased (there apparently was the potential to lose that too at one point).

I had to go to sparring class tonight, so efforts to finish the job didn’t resume until about 9:30. Now that I knew what the problem was, however, and had gotten one major step done before, I was able to fairly easily set things back up and get the new image on. Now I have to re-customize and re-download everything (which I knew I’d have to do in the first place, but wasn’t expecting so much work in between).

But hey, a win is a win, even if it was slightly Pyrrhic.

2012-366 Day 323 – Thanksgiving II

Two Thanksgiving dinners in two days (this one with mashed potatoes!) has left me feeling very blessed and very full. The traditional Thanksgiving spread my dad makes every year is always amazing, and this one was no different. Since we’ll all be at different family and locations on the actual Thanksgiving day this Thursday, it was great to have my parents and sister, Jess, and Kenny all together today.

Since I was lazy today and didn’t prepare anything beforehand, that is all for tonight. Short work week this nice will be nice, and then a great vacation.

2012-366 Day 322 – Thanksgiving I

Just got back from the first of several Thanksgiving meals, this one with our friends in the Tuesday Bible Study. Wound up being pretty large (19 people!) and Jess did a fantastic job of getting everything together in what wound up being a much larger undertaking than she had originally planned. Everything went great (even if someone forgot the mashed potatoes) and we had a TON of food. Next stop is a family meal with my parents and sister tomorrow night. Let the feasting continue!

In unrelated news, went to karate this morning and wound up being the only one in the second class. Got some good tips in my personal instruction to help with my kicks.

Haven’t gotten to write ahead yet on my story, and it’s late, so we’re having a short post today.

2012-366 Day 321 – Variance Prologue Part I

I told you it wouldn’t be long until the arrival of the second secret project. I really just wanted an extra day to get my thoughts in order without having to put it all down in the post. In honor of the back half of National Novel Writing Month, I am kicking off an on-going story that I will come back to over the rest of the year (and depending where it ends up, may be my project for next year). The deficient part of my blog I referred to yesterday was my story telling ability, so I’m going to work on that with a series of short stories (chapters, if you will) which will all be tied together down the line. I have my reasons for titling it “Variance,” but you’ll just have to see why down the road. As I said yesterday, this format will also allow me to write ahead a little when I have the chance, so I can have updates ready for days that I may be travelling or celebrating certain national holidays.

This is an ancient Eastern martial arts/samurai/ninja crossed with a cowboy western style story, though not tied to any particular land or custom (I will be making up my own if you can’t tell, thank you very much). I hope you enjoy it, I plan to have some fun with the story.

The wind whipped a tiny cyclone of dust along the empty, packed earth street. The weathered buildings still betrayed some of the life that had fled them minutes before, clothes strung along lines crossing above the walkways, a wisp of smoke curling from a chimney top, the fire unaware that it was supplying heat to an unoccupied room. A mud patch in front of one of the homes gave a small clue as to what transpired in the previous moments, several wagon wheel tracks were freshly imprinted there, puddles having just reformed at the depths of the tread. One would perhaps consider the area a newly minted ghost town, aside from the fact that the main street was still occupied by eleven figures.

The lone central figure was ringed by seven men and three women, although he didn’t seem too concerned about the situation. Simply appraised on their respective clothing, the reason for his confidence was pretty clear. Arrayed in a light gray padded body armor which left his muscular arms exposed yet rising to cover his mouth and nose with a lighter fabric, his figure would have been intimidating even without the hood that rose up from his shoulders and shaded the remainder of his face. The only other exposed area was his bare feet, which currently rooted him to the ground as he stood ramrod straight in the middle of a circle of the filthy dregs of humanity.

These lowlifes are not worth a description individually, any image of a ragtag band of pirates or thieves called to mind will likely fit the bill nicely. They are armed with the usual array of clubs, knives, and swords. Thankfully they possess no ranged weapons, as they would just as likely injure themselves as the target they were aiming at. Come to think of it, that might explain the odd eye-patch here and there among the group. Their fear is masked the loud grumbling of bravado, with occasional intelligible barb flung into the empty space between them and their quarry.

Unfortunately for the man in the center of all this, that description only held for eight of the ten people surrounding him. The final two, a man and a woman, stood back a little from there slavering brethren, arrayed in a fine silk, high collared, long sleeve tunic with a white dragon emblazoned across the front, matching the shade of their white pants, which were oddly devoid of the dirt around them. It was obvious that they held the leash of the bedraggled mob that surrounded the lone figure, and it was the deep voice, essentially a growl, of the man in the dragon tunic which finally cut through the flitting winds.

2012-366 Day 320 – Second Secret Project

Don’t worry, this one won’t require as much out of me as the last one did. In fact, this Secret Project is entirely for this blog. Since we’re coming up on the holiday season and some time periods where it may be difficult to update the blog consistently, I’ve decided to start a project that will help address some of those concerns. Not only that, but it will also help me address one of the areas that I wanted to use this year long blog experiment for and haven’t done so to its full potential.

It won’t be a secret for long, I actually planned on having the first part up tonight, but I’m just too tired and it’s too late. So instead you get this cryptic warning and can try and guess what’s coming up.

2012-366 Day 319 – Incremental Improvements

There are all sorts of things that change in small degrees in our lives. I’ve been keeping track of one (my weight) over the last year as part of my set of resolutions. That’s the thing about these changes, though, you have to monitor them to be aware they change. Leave them alone for any significant period of time and you’ll often be surprised at the result the next time you evaluate them.

Think about your age, for instance, people generally don’t count the days as they get older. That level of focus would probably drive you nuts. No, we’re happy enough to mark our progress in years (and half years if you are young enough to want a more granular level of evaluation, “thwee an’ a haf”) and go about our lives. By keeping our focus at that level, we can often miss the slow accumulation or degradation of skills and abilities.

That was a fairly high-minded introduction for what I wanted to talk about here. You may remember that at the beginning of the semester (back in September) I had to run a mile and a half in my fitness class for time. I was hoping to run a sub-nine minute mile and wound up running an 8:14 pace (total time 12:27). Well, we had our near-end of semester (we still have four weeks left, but I guess they wanted to do it while there was some semblance of light at five pm) follow up run on Tuesday. I got the email telling us about it that morning, so it was a bit of a surprise to say the least.

I really didn’t think that I would do all that much better. After having just ramped my activity back up, especially having run three miles the night before and playing Ultimate Frisbee at lunch, I didn’t feel I had much spring in my step. I took my phone out with me so I could log my mile and a half into the Nike site and keep my own time, since I had recorded the first go round on the app as well. We did some warm ups and then stepped onto the dirt track, having to complete seven and a half laps for the mile and a half.

I don’t think I’ve ever actually described the dirt track we run on for these classes. It’s built where some of the old temporary buildings and the old art supply store were. It’s 1/5 of a mile and built at a slight incline, so that you are running one straightaway uphill and the other downhill. It has two cement paths that cut across it so the curved section is separate from the straightaways (in terms of the dirt being broken up). The interior section is actually where we play Ultimate Frisbee during the day, with the cement paths on either side marking the beginning of the end zones.

So I threw myself uphill and tried to set an aggressive, but not all out, pace, knowing that this run was shorter than my usual runs. I had a hard time regulating my breathing, but also noticed I wasn’t really running out of breath despite that problem. My legs weren’t feeling great, but that was to be expected. The instructors had a timer going at the starting line, and I came around the first lap just under a minute thirty. I was too tired to extrapolate that out, but decided that I would try to keep close to that mark.

I will spare you the blow-by-blow of each lap, as it was just running around in a circle. I started the last half a lap around 11 minutes and finished in 12:05, though I couldn’t quite access my normal finishing kick on my tired legs. I hadn’t looked up my old time beforehand, so I didn’t know if I had improved or not, and, in fact, I felt that I had performed largely the same. My Nike running application did inform me that I had run my fastest 1K (4 minutes 40 seconds) and my fastest mile on that app (7 minutes 51 seconds). My average came in at just over 8 minutes, and my total time registered a 22 second improvement once I remembered to look up my old time on the phone.

So (finally) tying this back in to the top, I hadn’t been tracking my speed, I felt slower, and I was fairly certain I was not going to do well. Despite all of that, the incremental improvements I had been making in my fitness, between the class, running, the half marathons, softball, and karate, over the past three months carried me to a better time. I imagine if I had been rested I could have gone into the high seven minutes, which is amazing to me. And a little sad since I’m still nowhere near my high school times (yes, yes, I know, I’ve largely let them go, but I still miss them occasionally).

What other areas am I improving or sliding back on bit by bit? Realizing what an accumulated impact these sorts of things have, it’s a serious question to ask myself (and perhaps yourself), as it can be important to know when you need it. That reminds me, I have to get back to work on getting things together for my application to a doctoral program. Talk about the sum of incremental improvements . . .

2012-366 Day 318 – Highs and Lows

I realize that time is necessary to our understanding of the universe and placing things in a proper order (shocking, I know), but the unfortunate side effect is that it can place two experiences on polar opposite ends of the emotional spectrum within 15 minutes of each other. To go from laughing your butt off to sober reflection in so short a time period can give you a nasty case of figurative whiplash, although I suppose that is the more common way that these events occur (it seems much harder to go from sober reflection to laughing your butt of in a short time).

The fun times occurred tonight at a hangout where we got to prank a friend whose birthday was today, eat and have a good time talking, and then playing a great game of (game we haven’t made up a name for yet) where you write down a phrase, pass that phrase and a stack of papers to the next person, and they have to draw your phrase. The person after them has to write down what they think the phrase is from the drawing, and it continues around the circle until your phrase arrives back at you. Finally you present how your phrase got horribly twisted and corrupted to the group, going through all the drawings and intermediate phrases. It’s always a blast.

Leaving group, however, I got an email that called for some sober reflection and dealing with some difficult issues. I really wish I could elaborate on this, but I unfortunately can’t. Just know that I am only tangentially involved in the situation, the email was mainly informing me what happened and gave me some options on how to proceed. Speaking only in the broadest strokes, I can say that there is someone out there who could really use your prayers right now.

To go so quickly from fun to serious can be a challenge, but it also really speaks to the variety of life that we get to experience. It is often said that the highs are diminished without the lows, and occasionally we get reminded of that in rapid succession so we can quickly make that connection.

2012-366 Day 317 – Softball Playoffs

Hope everyone enjoyed their observance of Veteran’s Day. I will quickly throw one more thank you out there and let you refer back to my last two posts for my feelings before moving on.

I will warn you ahead of time, I’m writing this on Sunday night/Monday morning, so I’m still a bit raw. We lost our playoff game 13-12, so we’re the first team out (the team we lost to will advance to play the number one seed next week). This is absolutely the worst kind of loss in the season, a one run game in the first game of the playoffs. There are so many things that I can point to that could have swung the game in our favor, so many places where we could have scratched across an extra run or prevented one of theirs from scoring.

The worst of it is that the game pretty much turned on bad luck (I don’t know any other way to put it but luck). I mentioned that I managed to secure the field in Simi and that it would give us a bit of an advantage since it might cut down on home runs. Well, we found out today why no one else wanted to rent this field, it is oriented in such a way that the sun sets directly behind the batter. For the entire game I was battling the sun in right center, but for the second to last inning, the sun was in a place where I couldn’t even see the plate. Their three and four hitters came up and hit it to me, but I couldn’t see the ball at all, and it wasn’t until I heard the ball land that I could determine where it was. Both hits went for triples (I guess I can count that as something, I managed to track them down before they became home runs), and there was absolutely nothing I could do about them (I was wearing sun glasses, had a hat on, and a glove with webbing in it, and none of it helped). There was another ball in the first inning that I misplayed off the bat that cost us another couple of runs. I’m not used to my defense losing games, but I was terrible out there today and couldn’t buy a break.

My hitting was a bit better, as I hit three singles and scored twice. My hardest hit was, of course, the only out I made, as I hit it to where I was standing the previous inning with the sun in my eyes, but since the sun had since gone down and the other team was playing with three outfielders which meant no one was where I had been, thus when the ball hung a bit the guy who was playing in left center was able to come track it down without having to look at the same angle I had been.

I really liked my team this year, but it did seem that we had a bit of a curse on us. We lost three one run games, two of those due to field conditions involving the sun blinding a player. I don’t think it means anything, but it certainly is a bizarre coincidence. I also feel that we could have beat any of the teams out there, so it stings to have the chance taken from us because we were playing at the wrong time on the wrong field. Of course, had things broken even slightly differently for us during the season, we wouldn’t have been in that position in the first place. In all, just disappointing to have things go so drastically against us, especially things (like the sun) over which we had no control.

I much prefer the ending last year, where we got knocked out honestly and gave it our best. It feels like a lot was left on the table this year, and now I have to start over from scratch next season. I do need to practice my defense more between seasons, so if anyone wants to help me out with that I’d appreciate it.

I suppose I have complained enough for now. I wish the other teams the best of luck, someone had to have taken ours (okay, okay, I’ll stop).

2012-366 Day 316 – Veteran’s Day

I’m trying to decide if I feel that it is better for Veteran’s Day to fall on a weekend or not. On one hand, one could say that technically you are doubling up on the honor as there is the weekend day and also the observed day on Monday. I, however, don’t find that I necessarily think of it on the weekend as I’m still out and about doing my regular things, and only really still consider the Monday to be Veteran’s Day as that’s the one that I remember on. Seeing as I feel bad about the second one more than I feel the honor of the first one, I guess I land on the side that it is bad when Veteran’s Day falls on a weekend.

All that being said, I can only echo my sentiments of yesterday, and the same sentiments I will feel tomorrow. There is no person I have more respect for than a person who has honorably served their country. I am honored to be the descendant of a veteran (my grandfather) and have a cousin that is serving right now. I know that I am friends and even related to other veteran’s, and wish I could list and thank them all, but my memory and my words would likely fail me. I can only say thank you to all of those who made sacrifices to serve, from mere inconvenience to loss of life. You are true heroes, and I salute you.

I mentioned that I still went about my business today, and that included the start of softball playoffs. Rather than recount that here (which I feel would detract from this post), I will instead save it for tomorrow, especially since it’s going to be a little hard for me.

2012-366 Day 315 – Weekend Wrap Up XXV

Busy day today, with spending the morning at karate cheering on the Black Belt tests, getting sun glasses for tomorrow since I left my last pair at the field last week (stupid day light savings time making it get darker earlier), going with Jess to see Argo (which was excellent),and dinner and hang out with Jess’ parents.

Sunday (11/4) – Softball Game 8: Playoffs start tomorrow and I can’t wait. We rented a field in Simi for the next two weeks so we have lights should we go late (and I’m sure we’ll go late next week). The fences are deeper than Rocky Peak’s field, and I’m hoping that gives us an advantage since it will be harder for the other team to hit home runs and we don’t have many power hitters anyway.

Monday (11/5) – Voting: As you can probably tell, since all of my political themed posts were mostly complaining about the current state of politics, I’m not particularly happy about the system at the moment. I had significant issues with both major party candidates, and there were no third party options that fit my beliefs (not to mention being essentially a vote black hole). I think our two party system is beyond broken, and fear unless we come up with something else, things are going to become too divided.

Tuesday (11/6) – Long Day: It seemed like they were all long days this week. Thankfully there is a long weekend to follow.

Wednesday (11/7) – Lazy II: Oh, foolish, foolish me, I’ve think I’ve pretty well documented over the next couple posts after this one how I know I make the same mistakes over and over, and then proceed to make the same mistakes again. . .

Thursday (11/8) – Pacing: Because my quads are still sore from the workout on Thursday. I actually kind of appreciate the pain, as I could still move, but it reminded me of what I did wrong and what I tried to do right. I know I’ve complained a lot recently, but I’d still rather be able to do all this and experience some pain rather than not being able to do it at all.

Friday (11/9) – Rest II: All that said, I’m definitely looking forward to a little extra rest on Monday. I’m sure I’ll say it then, but there’s no harm in starting now: Thanks to all the Veterans who have served our country and all those who are currently serving. I wish nothing but the best for those who have and are protecting our country and carrying out their duty.
