2012-366 Day 334 – Grading

Only two regular class sessions left in my teaching job for the semester, then the final and a little break. I had a lot of grading to do catching up from vacation with several projects that had been due right before. I’ll admit, my least favorite part of teaching is grading, I just find it a little tedious and pretty boring. Yes, I’m pretty sure I’m allowed to say that. I like lecturing, love answering questions, don’t mind proctoring tests (why would I?), and like getting to know the students a bit. I really dislike sitting at a desk and evaluating the answers to the same set of questions over and over. But hey, it’s a part of the job, and, until I get fancy enough where I have Teaching Assistants, I get to do it (and complain about it briefly here, I guess).

Time to sleep before my busy Friday so I can make some sense while lecturing tomorrow. I actually have tomorrow planned out, you can look forward to the next installment in the Picture series!

2012-366 Day 333 – Rain II

I’m very much enjoying the rainstorm right now, and find it nice that we didn’t miss it during our vacation like we usually do. After a couple of longer posts the last two days, and a nice in-home date night with Jess where we had a great homemade dinner, popcorn, and caught up on some of our DVR backlog from the last week, I’m going to sit here and enjoy the rain outside and resist commenting on the fact that this is the last repeating day for the blog (333). Okay, maybe just that comment.

2012-366 Day 332 – Side Project I

Due mostly to this blog, I was asked to co-write the blog posts for my karate studio, Cutting Edge Karate. The first post went up today, so rather than make you read a bunch of text here and then send you over there, I’ll just put in the link and let you go get started. Enjoy!

2012-366 Day 331 – Thanksgiving Vacation Finale

I don’t particularly like talking about the specifics of our vacations while we’re on them because, well, this is a public blog and advertising the fact that we’re out of town isn’t particularly smart (despite the fact that I doubt the general public reads too much of this blog). If you know me or my family fairly well (or we told you before we left), you’ll know from the last several day’s posts that we were out at my grandparents place in Grand Junction, CO. A short 800 mile drive each way. 🙂

It’s always great to visit my grandparents, and sadly we don’t get out there often enough. I covered the basic highlights of our trip in the last few posts, and it was wonderful just to be able to spend some time with Nana and Grandpa. We were able to help out some around the house and enjoy a lot of home cooking. A lot of exploring, a lot of hanging out, and a lot of eating made for a very full holiday weekend.

Grand Junction is essentially my second hometown. My grandparents moved out there when I was 10, and I spent several weeks to a couple months out there every summer until I graduated high school. Since then we try to make it out there every couple years, and we were overdue (our last trip out was Spring Break 2010, if we remember correctly), so we decided to head out for Thanksgiving. We left Wednesday morning with the intention of stopping somewhere in Utah and arriving on Thursday morning, but it turns out that I felt pretty good and decided to drive all the way through (although we did decide to grab a hotel in Grand Junction since we got in late, a decision we knew we’d get some scolding for, but worked out fairly nicely since we found a good, cheap place – should you be in Grand Junction and not have access to my grandparents, we recommend the Econolodge by the airport just off the 70 on Horizon Drive). I was able to re-familiarize myself with the area fairly quickly, as the town layout hasn’t changed much (though some of the stores have).

I made two major changes which made the drive to and from (we got back a little while ago tonight) much easier, although I’m not certain if either had more of an effect. I mentioned in my Traveling post a few days ago (which, though I was being intentionally oblique at the time, you now know was from day one of our trip) that our frequent trips out there have made driving long distances fairly standard to me. I had noticed, however, the last few times that I was getting fairly tired towards the end of our trips. Nothing too serious, but definitely something to keep an eye on. The first change I made was deciding to change my fueling habits while I drove. Rather than eating several larger meals during our stops, I would instead make sure that I had food that would last me for a while and I could continue eating in the car. Same with caffeine and beverages. While this resulted in a couple more restroom stops, it completely banished the fatigue at the end of the trips.

The second major change was that we rented a car this time instead of taking the Yaris. It has already made the trip a couple times and we’ve put over 80000 miles on it in seven years, so we decided it needed a rest. We have a rental place just down the block from us (a Hertz with very friendly people), so we reserved a car and I went to pick it up when they opened Wednesday morning. They offered me a Chevy Cruze, and not knowing anything about it, I said sure. Turned out to be a fantastic decision. The technology in the car was fantastic, but there were two items that made our trip much easier. The first was the heated seats. Jess had an achy back going into the trip, and I’ve been known to have a flare up or two, and having seats with a heating pad built in made the trip much better. Not to mention the fact that it was occasionally cold in Colorado (no, really?), and getting a little boost of heat was quite nice.

The second, and by far my personal favorite, however, was the technology in the steering wheel. The right side had the stereo controls and allowed me to scroll through the favorites (and XM radio), which Jess said made me a “flipper”. Song I didn’t like? Boom, next station without taking my eyes off the road. The left side, though? The left side changed the way I do long distance trips. The left side had the cruise control, but with one important addition. I could set the speed from the steering wheel, but I could then use a rocker switch and adjust the speed up and down in one mile increments. No longer did I have to step on the brake, disengage the cruise control to maneuver around traffic, and then resume the previous speed with both my legs and my arm. Nope, instead I could drive large chunks of the trip using only my left hand as long as I was paying attention to the traffic in front of me (which, you know, you’re kind of supposed to do anyway). People slowing up ahead? Click down the speed by five miles an hour and see if it clears up. Speed limit change? Simply adjust to where the new point is without having to disengage and reengage at the new speed (by the way, Utah has a couple areas where it is testing an 80 mph speed limit. Kinda fun). I was able to maintain a consistent speed throughout much of the trip, which also helped with the gas mileage. I’m really going to miss that feature on our next long trip.

So now that you got that extended commercial, I now return you to your regular post. Actually, I was pretty well wrapping up, as, again, you can get a pretty good idea of the last few days from here and the previous posts. We had a great time and are glad to have made it back safe and sound. Sadly we have to go back to work tomorrow, but we planned ahead and took the morning off for a little more rest and to take the rental car back. It’s nearly December now, and another vacation is around the bend (though it won’t be quite so far), which I’m already looking forward to. In fact we already have a family gathering schedule for my other grandmother’s house in December which we are excited about (she lives in Apple Valley, so we get to see her a couple times a year, although we definitely owe her a visit or two as well). I am extremely blessed to have such a wonderful family, and I love them all very much (even Christine).

2012-366 Day 330 – Thanksgiving Vacation III

I just haven’t felt motivated to write too much on vacation (go figure, right?), and, sadly, the vacation has gone by much too fast. Tomorrow is a travel day heading home, so there’ll probably be one more lazy day in our future. Today was a nice hangout day, starting with church with my grandparents, going out to lunch, and then staying around the ranch. I did fit a run/walk in today (a lot of hills around here as usual, that and the thin air did me in for a few stretches), and it was great to run along the same streets I have for a long time, even when I was a kid running cross country.

It is sad that we’re already at the end, but I had a great time, loved seeing my grandparents, and enjoyed being in town again and seeing what has changed and what hasn’t. I’m going back to enjoying my vacation now.

2012-366 Day 329 – Thanksgiving Vacation II

Wow, today got away from me. Thankfully Jess reminded me before we hit midnight in Hawaii. Today was a nice, relaxing vacation day, with a couple of good family meals book-ending some final touches of exploring all the changes around here and shopping at some stores we hadn’t gotten to yet. Then we went to Wreck It Ralph (which I will say was very well done, although I’ll save the full review for another time, potentially), which is what really threw my timing off with the blog, as we got back around midnight and I hadn’t really thought about it. Seeing as it was a good day to relax, I’m also going to relax on this blog post. See you all tomorrow.

2012-366 Day 328 – Black Friday

Well, I wasn’t planning on making any big purchases on Black Friday this year. We have two perfectly good flat screens I got from previous Black Friday sales, and they both have been mounted on our wall in the last month, so I had no desire to change that set up. My laptop was starting to show its age (okay, it has been showing its age for a while now), but I didn’t see a need to replace it yet. Until last night . . .

Plugging it into the wall last night, I heard a large pop and then sparks coming from the power adapter. The cable had been separating from the supply for a while now, but it was still functional and mostly covered, so not all that dangerous as long as I didn’t touch the wires (I never touched the wires). Apparently the cables had been pulling away and finally severed and touched each other, hence the pop and the sparks. This adapter was already a replacement for the original, which I had to order online, as was the battery, which only lasts about twenty minutes now. I’ve had this laptop since I restarted on my thesis, so it’s pushing five or six years old. Since it’s Black Friday, we decided to see what laptop deals could be found.

Being Black Friday, of course, we succeeded. So I’m typing this on a brand new laptop with a faster processor, more memory, and a bigger screen that we got at a two hundred dollar discount. I am, of course, very happy.

We’ve spent the last three Black Fridays in three different locales (Modesto, Los Angeles, Grand Junction) and I have to say, if you can get out of LA on a Black Friday to do shopping, you should do so. We didn’t get up early for any of them, but we did go shopping each of the Fridays and managed to find some good things out there. But the volume of people, of course, was so much lower outside of LA and helped make the experience more enjoyable. Of course, there’s always the wonderful world of online shopping to continue looking at. I’ve probably made my biggest purchase of the season today, but hey, it was a good time to do it.

2012-366 Day 327 – Thanksgiving

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! A great day with Jess and my Grandparents, topped off with my third Thanksgiving dinner this week (and some chocolate cake pie topped with bacon, yes, you read that right, picture below). I am thankful for so many things this season, a list so long I’d be here for a long time.

Instead I’ll keep it short. I’m thankful for Jess, thankful for my great family, wherever they are today, thankful for all my friends, concentrated in L.A. but also spread throughout the country, thankful for my health, thankful for my jobs, and thankful for the generosity of all the people who gave back today in service, whether that be helping the needy, disaster recovery, or military deployment. Yes, that’s the short version.

I’m boycotting Black Friday earliness (okay, I’ve been boycotting that for the last five to six years) and am giving a disapproving look to all the stores that opened at some point today rather than giving their employees the day off. Uncool. Looking forward to enjoying the rest of my vacation.

Oh yeah, here’s the bacon pie:

It was pretty good, and the bacon was an interesting touch. I know you’re jealous.

2012-366 Day 326 – Traveling

I have to say, growing up in a family that took yearly summer driving trips (usually to Colorado to see my grandparents who moved out there when I was 10) really has made me into a fairly easy going traveler now that I’ve grown up(?). Several hour trips (like San Diego and Disneyland on a bad traffic day – although I still hate sitting in traffic) are a snap for me. Five to eight hour trips (like Modesto and Sacramento) seem like mid-range, pretty easy trips. And return trips out to Colorado (although not quite beyond yet) are totally ordinary (although a bit less frequent than yearly now) and slightly dull, as I’ve mastered the art of shutting my brain off except for essential driving functions for long stretches.

The holidays are, of course, a peak travel time, so one must be aware to have the best experience. Leaving at off peak hours and being willing to power through with few stops can make or break a trip. The most important thing, however, is staying safe, and that means driving safe as well as keeping yourself in safe situations. I hope everyone has safe travels this holiday season, and maybe I’ll see you around the town or out on the road.

2012-366 Day 325 – Thanksgiving Vacation

I’m glad it’s here, I’ve been needing an extended break for a little while now. Three day weekends are nice, but an extended break really helps get things back in focus. I’m very grateful (some might even say thankful) to be in a position where I have a job from which I can take time off.

In unrelated news, Jess put a picture up on Facebook (duplicated below) she took this morning of my eye. I got my first black eye in a long time last night, although it really didn’t show up until this morning. How did it happen, you ask? Fight Club.

No, seriously. Okay, we technically call it sparring class in karate, but same difference, right? Funny thing, when you’re learning to defend your face, you occasionally get hit in the face, because, you know, that’s where they’re aiming at. I don’t even remember which hit it came on (and no, it’s not because they hit me too hard . . . okay, maybe one, but it wasn’t in the eye).

I’m pretty tired at this point, so I’ll be continuing my streak of short posts. Apologies in advance, as I don’t know if that will change for the next few days as we hit Thanksgiving. I’m certain you understand, however, as you’re probably pretty busy too. So stop wasting time reading this (do come back another day, though) and go enjoy your Thanksgiving break too!
