We had the first game of the afternoon and, with the time change, a low sun in the sky. Since the field is oriented East to West, the sun was in the eyes of whoever was facing West. Lucky me, I got to face West first. Things begun rather inauspiciously with the first shot going through my legs (for some reason I jumped backwards for it, though it never left the ground), and it was from an angle so I can’t even blame the sun. But then we started to score and I actually started to look like I knew what I was doing. One play had me sliding out of the box to the right to block a ball coming in which prevented the goal but gave the other team a shot from the top of the goalie box (with a two person wall in front). The other team acted like they were going to kick it into the wall but then passed it around the wall to my left where someone had snuck to that side. I managed to slide over and get in front of it, killing the scoring chance. We ended the first half on the positive end of a 4-1 score.
After going up 5-1 to begin the second half, one of the guys on the other team put a perfect shot into the top corner of the net just out of my reach. We managed to tack on a few more goals and then I managed to stop the first shot of a breakaway, but couldn’t hold on to it and he was able to chip the rebound back over me. Up 9-3 with a few minutes left, something happened at the other end and, in the confusion, a little shot was put towards the other end of the net and trickled in without my actually going for it. We capped off the scoring with another goal and time expired for our first victory of the season, 10-4.
Looking at the standings so far (before today’s game), there were three undefeated teams (4-0, 3-0, 2-0 due to byes), three teams at 1-2, and two teams without a win (both at 0-3, one of them being us). In our three losses we played both the 4-0 team and the 3-0 team and one of the 1-2 teams, so my learning curve was being implemented by the two best teams in the league. We beat one of the other 1-2 teams today, have a bye next week, and then get the other undefeated team (albeit 2-0, and we’ll see how they did this week) the week after at 5pm (so we get to deal with the sun again). Our current goal is to win out and try an sneak into the playoffs, we’ll give it our best shot.
