Had a last minute call interrupt the break that I was going to use to write this post, but now that I’m back I realize I didn’t have a topic yet anyway, so why not tell you a little bit about my work by relating what I just did?
One of the the Senior Representatives came back and told me we were having an issue at the counter with one of the IDs, the person’s name was too long to fit onto the card. Knowing the Photo ID system, I told her I had to go back up front, because all the software is loaded on the counter machines (because we only have that many licenses for it). So I went to the front counter and met with the person and the Representative who was helping him.
Now we could do one of two things, either cut the name down (which the Representative said they did and were still having issues) or lengthen the name field on the template. Unfortunately we can only edit templates on one of the three machines, and the one we were working at wasn’t the one. After clearing up confusion as to which ID I was working with (it was the Staff ID, not Student ID, which made sense after I opened up the Student one and saw that the field there was already all the way across the ID), I copied the template to the server, renamed the copy to append the phrase “_LongName” and moved it to the template editing station. Opening the new template I created, I extended the name box so that it went from the left edge to the picture on the right, saved it, and then opened the template in the regular program to enter the name for testing. With the newly lengthened box we were able to fit the whole name and generate an ID for the person.
A pretty simple task, but these are the kinds of things I do with my day. The specialized knowledge was pretty much knowing where the templates are stored, how to make a copy of the template the system will recognize as valid – there are a couple files you have to rename, and how to use the template editor. See, you could do my job too! Okay, it might take you a little longer and I’m not yet willing to give it up, but now you’re one step closer.

Believe it or not, I’d love to follow you around and watch you do it. It would be educational, and I like that kind of detective / troubleshooting stuff.
The nut did not fall far from the tree, Matthew! 🙂 I think I’d love your job!
