2012-366 Day 21 – L.A. Sports Teams

As usual, these are my opinions and you are free to disagree. It just happens in this case I’m right.

Dodgers > Angels
Lakers > Clippers
Kings > Ducks
UCLA > USC
Whatever Pro Football team we get will stand on its own I guess.

Okay, done.

Oh, you want to know why?

Dodgers vs Angels: Angels are immediately disqualified due to the fact that, despite their creative geographical reasoning (Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, really?), they are not a Los Angeles team. The fact that I’ve always lived in the Valley and, growing up, any games that I was taken to (thanks Dad and Mom!) were Dodger games was probably the overriding factor. Add in the fact that my first real sports memory is Orel Hershiser’s phenomenal 1988 season (he’s still my favorite player) and Gibson’s World Series home run that year, it really just cemented my love for them. Now if we could just get rid of McCourt quickly and actually win the Series again, I would be happy.

Lakers vs Clippers: Really? I don’t know, up until this year, what path of life would lead one to become a Clippers fan, but I wasn’t on it. Seeing as the Lakers are the only ones to give me championships to celebrate in recent memory, can’t say I’m going to complain about my choice. I am very curious to see what will happen in the post Bryant years.

Kings vs Ducks: Seeing as the Kings were the only hockey team in town while I was growing up, they were the default. I didn’t switch my allegiance to the Ducks because, again, Anaheim. I only really got into hockey in the last three years, and it’s been a bit of a roller coaster ride, would like to see the Kings play up to their potential. LOVE Quick though, easily my favorite player right now.

UCLA vs USC: Not even sure why, but was compelled to pick a side growing up and I came down on the side of the school I had a shot at going to (financially). All the scandals in the last five years at USC have definitely not made me regret my choice, even if it did come at the cost of winning football. Seeing as all the other sports have combined for over a 100 championships, I’m okay with that, and it’s fun to see which programs win every year. In slightly related historical news, I did get accepted to UCLA when applying to college and was offered a small scholarship, so that kind of counts for something, I guess?

Pro Football: I’ll root for whoever comes to town. I’m a little ashamed to admit it, but growing up, Raiders > Rams. I was young, I didn’t understand, and I think it was just because their uniforms looked cooler. Now that I understand the fan base and personalities, I don’t think I would have made the same choice. Thankfully they left and I was able to detach cleanly.
